The Oakville Children’s Choir has achieved tremendous success in 13 years. Holding fast to its mission of providing world class choral, musical and performance training to young people in Halton, it has become a comprehensive music education programme for up to 150 auditioned choristers ranging in age from 7 through 17 years.
The OCC presents four annual concerts for the community. In addition, the choir performs at workshops, provides guest appearances at community functions, collaborates with other fine choirs and arts groups in Ontario, and has an extensive educational outreach program.
To develop each chorister as an all-round musician, theory, musicianship, vocal coaching and workshops with professional artists, are all components of the choral program. Competitions and touring also add to the chorister’s experience. The choir’s wide range of repertoire, diverse concert programming and its high standard of performance have all earned it an excellent reputation within the performing arts community—both locally and internationally.
The Senior Choir received a second place award in the Children’s Choir class at the International Choral Competition Kathaumixw in British Columbia in July 2002. The Chamber Choir was awarded a gold medal standing in April 2003 at the IX International Budapest Choir Festival. In July 2004, the Senior Choir was awarded both gold and silver medals at the 2004 Choir Olympics in Bremen, Germany. Both the Senior and Chamber choir were also finalists in the 2004 CBC National Radio Competition. In 2006 the Senior Choir toured to Prague, and in 2007 the Chamber Choir participated in Festival Europa in Italy. The OCC’s touring program has taken choristers to festivals and competitions in Italy, Newfoundland, British Columbia, Hungary, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.
