OCC Volunteers receive Above and Beyond Award

The OCC would like to congratulate Maria Maltais and Judith deKemp Scott for receiving the Above and Beyond Award for their volunteer contribution to the Oakville Children's Choir. Both Maria and Judith received their awards at The Oakville Art Council Award Presentation on November 3rd at the Town Hall. Special congratulations are extended from the Board of Directors to both Maria and Judith.

Maria Maltais has volunteered with The Oakville Children's Choir for 9 years. Maria is no stranger to many committees within the choir organizations and has been one of the key volunteers for fundraising for the past 9 years.

Maria has been involved with the OCC's Regal campaign for 8 years. Initially Maria helped the Regal Committee by placing orders and collating purchases. She is now head of the committee with success in raising over $10,000. Through Maria's dedication, the OCC is able to consistently run this highly successful fundraiser. The Regal committee thoroughly enjoys working with Maria as she motivates her committee members and makes this a fun fundraiser for everyone.

Maria is often found volunteering in the office, helping the publicity team run posters around Oakville or organizing refreshments for one of the OCC concerts. Maria is also involved with the Celebrate Oakville fundraiser. Maria can always be called upon to help out when a deadline is fast approaching.

Maria's daughter is in her ninth year with the OCC. With volunteers such as Maria it makes everything possible.

Judith deKemp Scott initially became involved with The Oakville Children's Choir in 1999 in an administrative capacity. After learning more about the choir she recommended it for her daughter. Judith then became an involved volunteer.

Judith jumped into the volunteer role as the Tour Manager for the OCC for their tour to British Columbia in 2002 and most recently to the OCC tour to Bremen Germany and Holland in the summer of 2004. She is presently preparing the choir for California this upcoming February 2005. Judith does an outstanding job organizing and implementing the daily schedule for the choristers.

Organizing over 65 people for an international tour is no easy task; Judith carries out the duties of Tour Manager with an efficiency envied by many other groups. In addition to her organizational talents, Judith helps raise funds. In 2003, she organized an Oktoberfest Dinner for the Germany tour and most recently organized a California Dreamin' Dinner for the California Tour.

In addition to the Tour Manager role, Judith is instrumental in helping with the OCC's major fundraiser event, Celebrate Oakville. Judith has assisted sourcing artists to decorate birdhouses, memory boxes and trays. Not only did she liaise with these artists, she managed to enlist the volunteer services of her father to handcraft these wooden items.

OCC wins gold and silver at Choir Olympics

The Oakville Children's Choir was supposed to have a happy birthday this past season, but the group exceeded expectations for its 10th anniversary with triumphs on the national and international stage.

The OCC's senior division competed in two of the 26 categories at the Choir Olympics in Germany this summer, winning gold in the children's class and silver in the folk singing class.

The Olympics is the biggest international choral competition in the world. This year, it featured 11,000 singers in 360 choirs from 65 countries.

"This confirms what I have felt for a while," says Glenda Crawford, the OCC's founder and music director. "The Oakville Children's Choir now ranks among the top choirs in the world."

More successes for OCC

Earlier in the season, the OCC placed second in two categories of a national choral competition sponsored by CBC Radio.

Now its chamber choir has been selected for another highly sought honour. It's been chosen, by audition, to participate in the American Choral Directors' National Conference, being held in 2005.

"These are spectacular achievements for a choir only 10 years old," says OCC general manager Liz Cloudt.
